First, here in the Midwest U.S. call it a pickle fork, cause that's what it 
looks like. I only use one as a last resort or when removing a joint for 
replacement. I find the most non-destructive method is to get two big hammers 
and whack the side of the holding portion 180 degrees apart at the same time. 
After a few good whacks the the tapered end should pop out. It's like 
squeezing a banana, the tapered stem has no place to go but out.
