I also had the "oil pan / guard" rattle. The way I discovered the culprit
was to push up slightly on the bottom of the sump with the engine running -
boom, noise stops.

The fix for me was replacing the engine mounts - the worn mounts had let the
engine sag all the way down to the guard.
