You may just have a loose timing chain.  When there's play in the
chain, they can resonate and hit the chain cover housing.  With
the engine stopped, loosen the nut on the tensioner, use your
cam turning tool to take the play out of the side where the
tensioner isn't, and re-tighten the nut.  You may see tracks
in the aluminum inside the chain cover, where the chain has
been hitting.
