Don't know what's wrong here, but I'd say nothing is "obvious" especially if 
it's intermittent...

And a second opinion from a qualified Alfa mechanic is now in order, since 
your guy is stymied.  Looking at every last nut, bolt, and wire and hoping to 
find something may work in the end, but it's bound to be the most expensive 
way to go.
