You figure out how many miles you travelled on how many gallons of gas.
Divide total # miles by total # gallons and you get the mpg.  The easiest
way to do this is to fill the tank, reset the trip meter, then jot down the
miles on the trip meter and the # of gallons required to fill the tank
during your next fill up.
