Re: Spica Fuel Pump

David,

The first time this happenned to me a knowledgeable alfisti (thanks, Bob, if
you're listening:) helped me out (tele-diagnostic, just like now:).

Chances are your rear fuel filter is clogged. High temperature worsens the
symptoms (vapor lock effects probably). It was really hot when it happenned
to me (by NW US standards).

My fuel pressure light wasn't working at the time, but I learned how to
diagnose it without one. Before you start the engine, turn on the fuel pump
and listen to it. If it's a continuous buzzing, the rear fuel filter is OK.
If it's interrupted and jerky, it is clogged. The car can actually run
fine for a while with these symptoms, until one day when it's really hot...

The fact that it does it at high speed (hey, what are you doing above 80mph
anyway?:) makes it obvious it's fuel starvation.

Replace that filter and pay attention to the old one: on my car the incoming
line is 3/8", and the outgoing line is 1/2". You might have it different.
Once you get the right fuel filter for you, make sure you get a pair of
goggles and a plug for the fuel line coming from the tank before starting to
work. Unplug the fuel tank line first and be prepared for a splash of gas!
Use your plug to stop that flow, then move on to the other end. The rest is
straight forward.

Once you do that, if the buzzing of the fuel pump is continuous, you're all
set: that was your problem.
