Re: Popping out of 1st and 3rd gears

Hi,

I just fixed the driveshaft u-joints in my second spider and notices on the
test
run that 1 and 3 gear are poping out. They were not doing that before but
the transmission
did not have a lot of life left. What could be the cause ? Could this be
fixed without
taking the transmission completely appart ?

Douglas, I had a problem with popping 1st and 2nd gears in my '69 Spider
Junior, and it turned out to be a loose selector fork. You have to take the
tranny apart in order to fix that. However, 1st and 3rd gears are operated
by 2 separate selector shafts/forks, and it is highly unlikely that both
would get loose at the same time. It sounds to me like during the work on
the driveshaft something was done to the tranny gear lever that now
restricts full engagement of those gears. Take your gearshift cover off and
make sure that there is nothing in the way of the stickshift engaging
forward all the way.
Hope it helps,

Val
