flasher unit broken?

Hi all,
I have a question about my flasher unit. A couple of weeks ago I wrote in,
asking where to get one cheaper than $109. I didn't hear anything back, and
in that time I realized that replacing the unit may not fix the problem. 
Basically, the strange symptom I'm getting is that the indicator light on
the dash is always on, and goes off when the exterior lights blink. In other
words, flasher off -> indicator on, and flasher on -> indicator off. All the
lights flash normally, so I'm hoping maybe there's something I can fix on
the flasher unit. Anybody have any suggestions for diagnosing what the exact
problem is? I'm not too good at diagnosing electrics, so anything would
help, short of the "replace it" test.......
