Re: Castle Hill Concours Winner

Tom Lesko plugged a (John H?) into his note about "a 1935 8C (2900) Grand
Prix car which took both the "Best of Show" trophy and the "Best Race Car -
pre 1945" trophy at the Castle Hill Concours (Ipswich, MA, USA). I don't know
the car, or anything beyond the generally published data on the 1935 8C, but
they had a 3822 cc enlargement of the engine which had started as a 2.3 (2336
cc, 65 x 88 mm b & s) and ran later as a 2.6 (2556 cc, 68 x 88 mm), 2.9 (2905
cc., 68 x 100 mm), 3.2 (3165 cc, 71 x 100 mm) and as a 2991 2.9 (69 x 100) in
the Tipo 308. The 3822 cc version was the rarest (fewest cars built and
fewest spare engines built originally) and had different bore centers,
consequently different blocks, heads, cranks, and camshafts. Reproduction
parts to build the 2.9 engines have been made in small batches in recent
years, and it is possible that a 1935 car which had run out of engines might
have been re-engined with a 2.9; I can't say, but "a 1935 8C (2900) Grand
Prix" would be an anomaly.
