Static timing
After reading Simon's reply to my post, I see where the confusion (for me) came
from.
He wrote, in part:
...The light is dark when the points are closed. It is lit when the points
are open. The spark fires when the points open...
Simon's light is hooked between the coil side of the points, and ground. This
will give lights just coming on when the points open, since the light gets its
voltage thru the coil.
When I use a static timing lite, I hook it between the battery and the points.
In this case, the points open, and the light goes out. The advantage is not
having to have the ignition on to do the test; i.e., no coil voltage present.
The disadvantage (?) is that the timing is done when the light goes out. In any
event, if static timing an engine, it is easy to make the mistake of timing at
the wrong point (light on vs. light off) and the timing will be off by the
dwell angle.
AMHIK!
