Geoff,

F'chrisakes don't ask about metrification in the US!  You'll just get the 
gun-crazies and black helicopter lunatics launching another 
thread-that-won't-die like the late (?) unlamented ranting.  Here in Amurica 
we are still free to use any system we care to or none at all if that suits 
us better.
