164 ticking

I have a 1990 164L 3.0
on cold idle its very erratic tickover accompanied by a clicking/ticking
noise from the engine bay.
It sounds almost like an ignition lead is off, but i can't see one off,
however once on the move its ok.

any advise would be appreciated, i've only had the car 2 days and its a bit
of a worry
