Re:Tunnel Slap

Since I started this latest string of talk about "tunnel slap", a variety
of possible causes have come forth, the latest being the tired springs. Of
this last cause, Jack Haggerty writes:

Fortunately (unfortunately?) for me, my springs are aftermarket and while
not new, they're not sagging at all and perfectly even. I haven't removed
the trans mount bracket yet to verify the trans mount orientation, but I
noticed that screws holding the shift lever boot are a tad too long. I also
see evidence of impact at the donut and the front U-joint yoke where the
new bolts holding the handbrake lever are also a tad long. I plan to fix
these things first as well as the bushing in the front end of the drive
shaft as Tom Sahines recommended. I remember having a choice of which way
to install the donut so that the intermediate bearing mount lined up with
the studs, so maybe I need to reconsider that too. I've got one of those
"no blow" guibos, and it is much stiffer than the tired one it replaced,
maybe too stiff! I'm about to order urethane trailing arm bushes and T-arm
bush, so maybe that will help keep the tail-end of the drive shaft in
better position. If none of that works, I plan to lower the mounts with
some spacer washers.

Man, for such a simple thing as the driveshaft, it's amazing all the things
that could be wrong! It seems everybody has had their own problem and cure.

Still looking for my own cure,
Mike
