actually, what i was referring to is that as long as they are here selling
cars then they are legally required to provide some level of support for
some period of time (which i believe to be seven years, but i could be
wrong).  if they come back prior to december 2002 then they are still
required to provide this level of support for cars sold within the prior
seven years, however if they return after december 2002 they start with a
clean slate, since they hadn't sold any cars in the prior seven years.

obviously if a manufacturer goes bankrupt, or simply bails out, it would be
tough to get them to provide support for what they sold.
