Lead Thread

I see the lead thread has come around again. Sorry if this is already beaten to
death, I'm about a week behind in reading my digests...

Lead was used in gasoline primarily as an inexpensive octane enhancer. As a
secondary benefit, lead oxide, a by-product of combustion, was deposited on
exhaust valve seats and prevented exhaust valve seat recession in vehicles that
did not have hardened valve seats. Lead oxide also provided an insignificant
amount of lubrication of upper cylinder walls.

Lead itself in gasoline is not a lubricant. In fact, the opposite is true since
the use of lead in gasoline requires the use of a lead scavenger which will
reduce lubricity.
