164 Alarm Question

I have a '91 164L and want to get the alarm working, but 1. I do not
have the key to the alarm and 2. I do not have the remote.

I have heard horror stories about having to replace the alarm with one
with a key and also having to replace the ECU to get the remote to
work.  Is there anyway around this?

How do I go about getting the alarm to work?
