Reasons for Oil consumption

I have two 2 litre 4 cylinder cars that both use oil at a fair rate (1
litre/1500 miles or so)

'94 Alfa 164 TS - no symptoms, just uses oil
'93 Fiat Tipo GT 8V - white smoke at start up for first 2 minutes
no blue smoke or other signs at any time in either, no leaks.

Anybody any ideas ? valve seals ? crank seals ? piston rings ?
give me a clue, I want to get this sorted, as it is costing me a small
fortune in oil.

Any replies would be VERY gratefully appreciated.
