John H made a very good call. So what is an "engine"?
Data: 1 kg roughly = 2.2 pounds:
Whilst performing an engine rebuild on a 116 1779cc engine, I weighed
the
components on an electronic scale. Any errors are due to depleted brain
cells
from excesses of good Barrossa Chardonnay.
101 kgs includes:
Block with liners 19kg
Head 25kg!!!!
Crank 19.5kg
Sump pan 6.5kg (a true work of art)
4 X rods/pistons 5kg (all were within 1 gram of each other).
Flywheel (stock) 10kg ?????
Starter (forgotten, est 10 kg)
Alternator (forgotten, est 6 kg)
Does not include:
Bellhousing (?kg)
Oil (5kg)
Coolant (8 kg total in system)
Headers (?? <mine had fabricated pipes>)
Dellortos and air filter and cradle.
If you add oil, coolant, headers, Webers, and a clutch you end up in the
300
pound area as per the historical data.
I guess there are a number of reasons to want to know engine weight:
1. How many gorillas are needed to pull it out (101 kg dry, or down to
60 kg
if you remove alt, starter and head insitu.....yuk)
2. If engine swapping (bastardising) with different breed of engine. If
you
compare the weight of "an otherwise identical car" that has a different
engine
(eg 75 T-spark vs. 75 2.5l V-6) there is a fair scope of error.
Sometimes larger
engined cars from the same line-up have more luxo features, or different
seats,
or 652 lb / 1 mph impact absorbing bumper bars.
3. Shipping weight.........in this case you would most likely ship 85 kg
(187 lbs),
ie "complete dry engine" but w/o alt and starter.
4. Engine weight (or any non-structural weight for that matter) has a
negative
effect on crash worthiness.
5. Pure curiosity and subject of discussion.
Mandatory non Lotus content:
An Ilmor/Mercedes F1 engine (3.0 litre V-10) is claimed to weigh 107
kgs.
The Alfa F1 engine of the 1970's (3.0 litre flat 12 that powered the
Brabham
BT46) was claimed to weigh 181 kgs.
Cheers
