Actually, loosening the upper one is a lot easier BEFORE you remove the
spring (DOH!). If you have the car jacked up, the suspension is at full
droop. The upper arm is holding the spring in check. The tapered bolts
on both joints point down. If you loosen the nut on the upper arm, (but
DON't remove it), then rap the hub with a hammer, it will pop loose. You
rap the part the tapered bolt goes thru, just below the joint. You then
remove the spring and undo the lower one with a ball joint puller.

With the spring out, you might be able to do this with a bottle jack
where the spring goes, but I haven't tried that. The upper one isn't as
accessable as the lower one. A standard, screw-type puller should work
on the lower one.
