I had this exact same problem with my 88 gold milano. the only
difference was it was accompanied by a whining sound. the dealer
diagnosed that the torque converter was shot and offered me a new
"rebuilt" by alfa transmission for 1300 or just a new torque converter
for 1800. Got the new transmission and it is still shifting flawless
for the new owner after 6 years.
