164 LS Automatic Transmission / Electrical Mystery

Last Thursday, my 1994 164 LS automatic transmission quit working?
Except reverse? (These will all be questions)

It was towed to the AR service place in Austin where when unloaded from
the flatbed, the transmission allowed the car to be driven in forward
(only 3rd gear?) and reverse?

Later in the day, the battery went down; because the auto-trans cooling
fan had been cycling on and off during the day?

Dash indicator shows 'sport' '3' and a green auto-trans icon?

Transmission has fluid?

Any ideas?  Anyone had similar?

No fuses are blown?
