A popping exhaust can also be caused, or aggravated by exhaust leaks.
If your car starts popping more than usual, check for leaks. A car's
exhaust system gets pulses of pressure. In between pulses of positive
pressure from the exhaust ports, the flow of gases out of the system
will actually pull a slight vacuum on the system in between pulses.
If the exhaust is leaking, it can suck in fresh air when under vacuum.
With the next pulse of hot exhaust gas, you can ignite the extra gas
in the exhaust. Under decelleration, you can get more raw gas in the
exhaust system. That's why some Alfas have a fuel cutoff solenoid for
decelleration. That's another thing to check.
