Brian S. is (as usual) right about your doing this the hard way.

You have a couple of options here.  

Unbolt the swaybar, support the low end of the trailing arm with
a jack, unbolt the trailing arm from the axle shaft and lower it with
the jack.  Not much pressure on the springs and is perfectly safe.
Let the rearend suspend from the limit straps.  No need to tackle
that mouse trap if you don't have to.

or

Compress the shock and use some safety wire to hold it.  Insert
the shock into the hole in the trunk, line up all the holes and cut
the safety wire.
