More on GTV 6 Shifting Woes

Some of you may remember my panicked post, late last week, about my GTV 6's
insecurities toward shifting. Well, after a ride home from the nice tow
truck-driving man, I crawled underneath for further inspection; here is what
I found:

The shift linkage was fine, much to my surprise. After the overwhelming
response from people saying it was the linkage (and I was so looking forward
to this cheap fix!), I was shocked and amazed to discover that the linkage
was okay.

That having been discovered, I was now more certain of the true problem --
not more certain about what it was, exactly, but merely that it resided in
the category of "more expensive than shift linkage".

Upon further inspection (please excuse my lack of technical knowledge of the
names of some of these parts):

The rubber boot located where the shift linkage enters the gearbox had
become somewhat disassociated with the metal 'cylinder' it enveloped. After
moving the linkage around from underneath the car, I came to the conclusion
that the bind was definitely located in$ide the gearbox. As fate would deem
it to be, I pulled back solidly on the main shift linkage rod at the exact
same moment that my friend Dave (located in the driver's seat) moved the
gearshift into 3rd. This broke the bind with a little "snap" sound that sent
dollar signs shooting out of my eye sockets. The aforementioned rubber boot
got pushed up against the gearbox, where it stayed. The next thing I hear is
Dave saying, "Man, what did you do? It's fixed!" I didn't beleive him, but a
subsequent trip around the block confirmed that the car was indeed shifting,
and quite well!

All has been fine since, except for a few times when the shifter has hung
when trying to get into 3rd gear. It has only happened going into 3rd gear,
but I have been able to push past it every time so far.

I have already started a seperate savings fund for use when whatever I did
to the inside of my gearbox comes back to haunt me!

Anyone have any idea as to what the problem is? Marred bushing? Something in
the way? Bad component?

TIA, and cheers!
