Re: 69 Spider questions

The Burman steering box can be identified by the oval plate on top. To
replace the seal, you have to get the Pitman arm off the bottom, but you
don't need to pull the box from the car. The seal is just an O-ring,
but it's an odd size. Once you have the arm off, you can unbolt the
large top plate. Crank the wheel all the way over til the "nut" that
rides on the worm is all the way to the front. You can then lift out
the connecting link and the steering box output shaft. Clean it out and
replace the O-ring in the groove at the bottom. Make sure to check the
shaft for wear. If it's badly worn, the whole box should be replaced.
Adjust the end play of the output shaft by adding or removing shims
under the small oval plate. Too much play makes clunking noises.

The gearbox leak may just be the rubber washer under the gear lever.
The large dished washers are supposed to be held down by the rubber one.
Some oil is supposed to come out, but not a lot. Make sure the tiny
drain holes on either side of the tower are clear. That's how the oil
is supposed to get back in. The inner boot is supposed to contain what
oil does get out until it can crawl back in through those tiny holes.

I haven't had the pleasure of doing a trunnion. Good luck. ;=)
