[alfa] Alfa GT Jr Coupe Question



I'm not quite sure where the "Junior" questions were coming from, or where they were going, but they might stand a couple of footnotes. One is that the shorthand numbers Alfa used to indicate displacements were a bit slippery: "1750" was a sales department conceit to piggyback on the fame of the 6C 1750, and all 1750 and 1800 and 1.8 Alfas shared a common bore, stroke, and displacement of 80 mm, 88.9 mm and 1779 cc.  Conversely, there were two sizes of 1300 (or 1.3) engines: 74 mm x 75 mm, 1290 cc, and 80 mm x 67.5 mm, 1357 cc. (There was also a 78 mm x 67.5 mm, 1290 cc engine in the GTA Junior.)
 
A second quibble is with Bob's statement that "Juniors had a different level of trim and varied in styling details. For  example, when GTVs had four front lights, The Juniors had only two." Usually, but not invariably, true. The Juniors usually had more stark trim levels to differentiate a range of prices for the market, but the last versions of the GT Junior, both 1300 and 1600, were apparently identical with the 2000 in all trim details except for the omission of bumper overriders on the Juniors.
 
A last point of possible interest is that the Giulia GT Junior, Spider 1300 Junior, Junior Zagato, Giulia 1300 Super and Nuova Super 1.3 all shared the same engine in the same state to tune. (The 1357 cc engine was only used in the 116 Giulietta Nuova.) I don't have breakdowns of the numbers for all subtypes, but there were 7,237 Spider 1300 Juniors and 195,031 Giulia 1300 Supers, a twenty seven to one margin favoring the sedans over Spiders, and both far more than their 1600 cc versions. Europeans, at least in that era, had very different ideas than Americans have about how much power,speed, and sporting image were sufficient.
