Goggomobile was the car, Google was the search engine I used to find the
reference:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timing_belt

The first known timing belt was used in 1945 [4]
B/index.html?page=/howtos_tips/automedia_html/ccr/CCR20020301TB/CCR20020301T
B.htm). The German Goggomobile was the first mass produced vehicle to use a
timing belt[5] (http://www.motorminute.com/Service/TimingBelts.pdf) in 1950.
The first American vehicle to use a timing belt was the 1966 Pontiac
Tempest.

Logic doesn't say it will last 'infinitely' longer. Infinity is a very long
time.. Indefinitely, perhaps? At any rate, Dr Tenney pointed out that
there was no drop in reliability with the single row chain vs the double row
chain.

I had to go and look it up. He mentions 7 hp, on a 120 - 140 hp engine
that's more than 5%, not insignificant.

Wrt the rubber vs metal, I agree. I hate the belts.

Fwiw, Dr Tenney mentions the single row chain (7 hp), removal of mechanical
fan (7 hp), and gutted generator (4-5 hp) as places to go looking for HP.
