[alfa] A/C in Round-Tail



Anyone "successfully" install A/C in a Round-Tail / Duetto? No, not really thinking of it too seriously, but would like to know if it can be done.

My definition of successful would be to have cold / coldish And hot air air come out of a single opening on the heater / A/C unit just above the transmission hump where "only" the heater outlet now resides. This way the fresh air and "defroster" vents would remain the same.

I hate to admit it, but I have no idea if heaters and A/C units can be stacked in one unit together. I've never removed the dash / heater / A/C off the '75 Alfetta GT. The '79 Alfetta out front has the (I believe) aftermarket dealer installed unit which is easy to see there is a separate heater above and (bulky) A/C unit below since the dash/ cowling is off. Trust me, there aren't many places I haven't been on Series 1 & 2 Spiders, but there are a few parts of my Alfetta which are still relatively virgin territory.

I've always meant to go meandering around a Pick-A-Part to peer under the smallest of Japanese cars to see how compact they managed to make the heat and air units. What I'm afraid is they cheated by putting a goodly amount of the stuff in the engine bay and / or under the windshield cowling - meaning halfway between the engine bay and interior and one would have to do a lot of sawing to get the entire unit / units.

Again, not a big deal, but if there is one compact puppy that fits where the heater currently is but does double duty - sure would be tempting. Almost 3:00 p.m. and down to only 95 degrees. Gotta do some painting soon. What do you think the odds of orange peel are?

Oh yeah, read a bit back that one of the hybrid gas / electric cars is using an electric A/C compressor. Fascinated me since this means it doesn't necessarily have to be strapped to one side of the engine or the other. Anyone have one? Work?
