Colin  You should always check the fuel low pressure warning light operation when you initially turn the key to "on." Check that it momentarily comes on, then goes out as the pressure builds up. You're low pressure problem might be due to a clogged rear filter or it may not. It could be a weak or failing fuel supply pump. If your fuel pump is a 3-port original, it's way past its useful life. Failing fuel supply pumps often exhibit erratic operation, failing, then working ok for a while, and so on. If it were my car and the original fuel supply pump was still in it, I'd change it at the hint of trouble, or at least carry a new one in the trunk so I could change it on the road if needed. Finally the low pressure light will come on more and more often. Finally, the fuel pump might blow a fuse and quit altogether. If it blows a fuse, that's it. It's done for. Don't try and power it up again.

Your mechanic should be diagnosing the low pressure light for you. If it turns out to be just a fuel filter, fine. But he should also check for sediment/rust in the fuel tank (depending on what he finds in the rear fuel filter, and the electrical connections at the fuel supply pump.
