First, nit-picky headlight factoid: HID lights actually draw less
current than incandescent bulbs, if I'm not mistaken.
True but the switch-on surge is very high. That's why it arcs
switches and destroys them. Once the bulb is lit, they actually do
draw a bit less current than the same rated QB.
I'd have thought that the ballasts included with the retrofit kits
utilized a capacitor or something to supply the necessary switch-on
current and retain compatibility with existing wiring and switch.
But I guess you're right, because the Sylvania kits include a relay,
which would only be necessary if the switch-on surge isn't handled
entirely by the ballast.
