[alfa] adjusting cam timing, V-6

I changed the timing belt on my Verde last week. When I was done, the
1-2-3 cam was about 5 degrees off. This weekend, I was going to fix it.
Following the instructions in the manual, I removed the big nut on the end
of the cam. I then removed the 3 bolts that hold the "hub" (Alfa's
description)in place. I removed the hub and turned the cam until the
indices on the cam and bearing lined up. Unfortunately, when I went to
reinstall the keyed "hub", the holes for the dowel pin and the two other
bolts in the sprocket wouldn't line up. I didn't have a spare cam sitting
around to show me what I was missing, and I shied away from taking too much
else apart. I put things back like I found them and buttoned her up.

Shouldn't the cam turn independently from the sprocket wheel? What should
I be doing that I wasn't?
