Follow the manual, paying special attention to the distributor timing and redo the belt. I had the same problem when I did my first timing belt. No amount of cursing/fettling fixed it... I started over, this time double checking my progress and it worked out right.

Also you can't index the cam pulleys on the V6, except possibly with offset keys, or degreed pulleys.
