[alfa] GTV-6 starter

Hello fellow Digesters (!),
The starter on my 84 GTV-6 rather suddenly began to crank at what seems 
like half power. The battery is new, and all other electrics are working 
properly (except the emergency flashers, but thats a puzzle for another 
day...). Does anyone know if starters go bad like this? I thought they 
slowly lost their cranking power over time.  Anybody know how to check 
the starter w/ a multimeter? And, which grounding strap is associated 
with the starter? And, is it possible the timing has changed via sensor 
failure which might send the wrong signal to the ignition system? If so, 
which sensor?
