IMHO, I would probably give them a light spray of laquer so that you can wipe 
it off later with laquer thinner.  Or, you could just go ahead and prime 
everything now and then reprime the areas where you weld in the patch panels 
when you're done.  If the humidity isn't too high and the car is stored 
inside, you could just leave it in bare metal.  I wouldn't use WD40; it's a 
solvent not a lubricant - it will take off what protection is there now.
