Hello all,

Another option on clocks is to replace the original mechanism with a quartz
movement. Makes the clock keep time better too. This can be done invisibly as
far as the exterior appearance is concerned. I had mine done by Speedy Cables
(London) Ltd. Their contact info is:

The cost was £30. At the same time, the speedo and rev counter were overhauled,
£30 each, and the other three gauges were cleaned and tested for £10 each. All
prices are plus VAT. The speedo was reset to zero and re-calibrated.
Considering the appalling condition of all gauges (sat in damp garage for 12
years) the finished result was miraculous. As necessary, the cases of the
instruments are re-plated, new bezels are fitted, and if the dials are past
their best and beyond refurbishment they will be replaced too.

My gauges are still not installed in the car, though, so don't know for sure if
they work yet.

Mail order service available, I believe. If anyone wants a new Smiths
instrument for an additional function they can supply one to match the others.
Eg both electrical and mechanical oil pressure gauges are available at around
£50 + VAT. I believe these may be available at lower cost elsewhere (usual
suspects) but I have not researched this in detail.

On a more general point, I would always recommend using a specialist like this
(for a refurbishment job) rather than one of the general parts suppliers. You
get to talk to the man doing the job, you can tell him what you think you want,
he will then explain what you really need, and if anything goes wrong you stand
much more chance of getting it put right and with less hassle. IMHO for what
it's worth etc.
