Hmmmmmm
Burnt out. Yes possibly if the wretched thing is in a constant state of
sparking or arcing even when in the one setting. 
Maybe even the rheostat heats up which causes the printed circuit to distort
and this causes the edges to catch in the contacts.
I may have to fork out the GBP36 or so on a new one, but first will try the Mr
Wattam suggestion of by passing it to be sure a brighter output is possible.
