Several things have caused my normally cold running Stag to run hot.
First was low water level.
Second was the placement of a Rally plate in front of the front grille.
Third was a busted hose, which is the same as the first above.
Seems to me if the radiator was not burning your hand the thermostat may well
be closed. 
Anyway I suppose you have it sorted by now.
