Re: Dashboard Removal

Hello Pelham,
I am sure you found all the other things that are "too short" behind
the dash. Wives - girly friends have smaller hands in some cases to
reach around those close things behind the dash board, but may end up in
no car fixing going on!!  Ah Hem...;-}
After loosening the dash screws ands clock reset cable, but before
pulling the dash forward (unless it falls forward all by itself), place
a thick towel across the steering column, then crawl under the car and
loosen the speedo cable from the 3-4 metal securing tabs along the
chassis from the tranny, feed it back about 2-3 inches toward the front
through the metal clips, then pull the slack thru the engine compartment
and push the slack into the dash along with some oil tube slack if
fitted. Actually you will find that all the slack in the cable is down
there in the speedo cable at the tranny. The dash will fall nicely
back onto the towel covering the steering wheel column, enough to undo
the speedo cable unless the cable bundle is still secured by tape in a
couple of spots.
Now, before you put things together, take 10 minutes to disconnect the
speedo cable from the tranny, pull the speedo cable back thru the cable
housing, inspect the length for signs of spot wear, lube it up with some
lubriplate (lightweight white chassis grease) or graphite and feed
carefully back into the cable housing. If it binds going back in, find
the place where it is binding and loosen that spot or check for kinks in
the cable housing. Put things back together. The life of your speedo
cable has just doubled.

In my humble Opinion, yours for speculation...
