    As I think someone may have already stated, the whine comes from
improper meshed pinion to ring.  When you dissassemble the diff, the
wear pattern should be exactly in the middle of the gear.  If the wear
is to the left or right, it is the depth of the pinion.  One side's wear
pattern causes a whine on acceleration, the other side's pattern on
deceleration.  A rebuild of the diff with a new crush bush/shims is
required, so replace the pinion gears and seals at the same time.
(Humm, mine is on jacks and axles off, maybe I should drop the diff?)
