   Richard,
         Thanks for that. Faversham Classics reconditioned
my heads about five years ago and, as you say, they do
spend your money (without asking!!). My final bill was
around £1,300 and I could have had the whole engine
rebuilt by Harts for less.
         Interestingly, I took the car back a few days after they
had finished, to complain of a lack of power. They kept the
car for a day, gave it back saying it was perfect and charged
me an extra £80. A week later I drove it through France and
it started to misfire as the outside temperature rose. It broke
down in darkest Provence and was trailered to the AA's agent,
a Fiat garage, who played around with it for an hour and told
me there was no compression and I probably needed to replace
the valves!! They got it going but it finally expired in Nice and
had to be trailered back to England. I finished the holiday in the
Opel version of a Vauxhall Cavalier -- not quite the same.
        Worryingly, the Stag had not got back by the time I had, but
it arrived a few days later. I had an independent AA garage look
at the engine and they found all the tappets had been over-shimmed.
I went back to Faverham Classics, who hotly denied any liability,
so I ended up taking them to the Small Claims Court where I won
and was awarded about £300 damages.
        However, next to Faversham Classics is Faversham Restorations
who are, apparantly, unconnected and I am getting a price from them
at the moment, but they are muttering labour costs of between £3,000
and £6,000 plus parts, so I thought it might be prudent to get a second
quote.
