Oil Pumps - Uprated

Dear all, (and especially Mike Wattam & Tom Jell)

I read recently Tom Jell's and Mike Wattam's notes on low oil pressure and as I am a sufferer I thought I try replacing the oil pressure releif valve. As I am for an easy life I just ordered the whole pump from Rimmers.

Sadly they were out of stock until August. They offered me the uprated pump which was exstock and only a few pounds more so I went for it.

The new pump came yesterday and I start the job this morning. After wrestling the downpipe off (no skin left on knuckles) I removed the pump OK.

With both old and new uprated pump on the bench I compare the differences.....I can;t see any. They appear to be the same size in all dimensions. Perhaps the old pump was already uprated !

I also note that no 'O' ring was supplied with the new pump (the one that mates the pump to the block). The old 'O' ring looks fine so I thought I would re-use it but sadly the groove in the new pump is much deeper and wider (by about 0.75mm each dimension) so the old 'o'ring gets burried in the groove - no good I guess. As it's Sunday today and Bank Holiday Monday tommorow I'm stuffed. I have already loosend an email to Rimmers but can any one answer these questions for me.

1. Is it normal to get an 'o' ring with a new pump ?

2. Are there different sizes of grooves in pumps (and hence 'o' rings) ?

3. What is the (visible) difference between a standard and an uprated pump ?
