Hi Peter & all..
I think you tell rockwell hardness by scratching with calibrated
scratchers, ie: if the scratcher is less hard it won't make a scratch.
Which brings up the point, don't you want the water pump gear softer than
the jackshaft gear since waterpumps are far easier to replace? And
actually, a softer gear is less likely to break through fracture? Although
if Tony Hart recommends r-60, a good machine shop should be able to easily
test it while you wait.
On another subject, could you ask Mr Hart what he thinks about cutting
holes in the wheelwells to improve airflow through the radiator (and anyone
else's opinion as well)?
