RE: Re[2]: [ihc] Engine ID by pic

Jim,
I believe 100% that the 401 (V-400) was used to fill the demand for 'big' V-8s in the Light Line.

I was a littl'un, but wasn't this about the peak of underperformance caused by emissions requirements? Would seem to make sense that more folks wanted the big engines, until of course the embargo, but I can't recall exacltly when that hit.

I've always figured that the 2WD install was somehow easier (perhaps as simple as one less front driveshaft to stock?) because I've never seen one in a 4x4 IH.

I also figured that the travelall was the most likely to be used as an occasional tow-vehicle, and so would perhaps be less needing of the "all-day, every-day" durability of the IH motors. Ditto the half-ton 100.

So it seems like a natural that they'd just be in the lightest of the line, the 1010 in 73 and the 100 in 74. I doubt numbers are available, but it just doesn't seem like they needed to use too many in '73, and even fewer than expected, thus the holdover in '74.

All conjecture. But somehow it resonates in my head that it makes sense, even if I wasn't able to replicate that here. :-)

Or could it have to do with disk brakes? Gotta have the whoa before the go! ;-)

And as for the 2 barrel, hmmm, I sure don't know! But it would look really nice replaced by a new Edelbrock intake and 4 barrel, or a vintage dual quad, or, in an I-won-the-lotto world, and Indy racing setup!

Okay, I gotta get back to work. Happy Friday, all.

Joel

Shoots a .44Mag size hole in that theory, don't it? :)
Obviously I had overlooked the 258. If I understand the comparative mounting
of the 258 and 401 correctly, that same x-member should accept the 401. So
how come for the '73's I've only seen them in 1010's AFAIK?
