Lucifer's Hammer, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.  They also wrote 
Footfall.

Or there is Harly's "Lucifer's Hammer," riden by Jay Springsteen.

A Scout II saves the heroes in The Mist, a short story published in 
Skeleton Crew, a collection of short stories by Stephen King.

Not much of a King fan, but found the collection among books at home, and 
by reading it, pretty much proved that I'll read almost anything.

IIRC, King owned (or still owns) a Scout II.
