[ihc] Joel's 4.25" Backspacing

Joel:

How close is the rim to the knuckle where tie rod connects up to it with
your 4.25" back spacing?  I'm running 28575R16s (basically a 33x10.5) on 16
inch rims with 3.75" of back spacing and I have less than an inch between
the rim/tire and the knuckle.

The tire position is just about what I wanted and the tread is just inside
the top of the top of the fender.  I was thinking about going with other
16x8 rims with 4.5" of back spacing on my 800 with Scout II axles to keep
the tire inside the wheel well as much as possible but had second thoughts
when I noticed the rime/tire to knuckle clearance.

By the way, nothing rubs yet but I really have not had the chance to put the
new suspension through a work out.  I should be able to finish everything
left to make it safe this weekend.

I run 33-1250-15s on 15x10 with 4.25" backspacing and
they don't rub unless I'm hitting something with the
tire ie. curb, rocks, cliff wall, etc.

with only 2.75 inches of backspacing you'll have 2/3
of the wheel outside of the bearing and with 35s
you'll be putting a heckuva load onthe bearings front
and rear.  Ouch.  My bet is that you'll be servicing
bearing about eery 2 years or so.  I have 4" springs
and 2" extended shackles, but the springs are more
like 5".  When I measure the truck, it comes out about
8" higher, after the urethane bushings too.

I'm running this setup on a Traveler and a Scout II, 33-1250-15s, 4.25"
backspacing 15x10s, 4-5" springs, 2"+ extended shackles.

So I'm still figuring out the details for putting
35x12.50 R15 tires on 
my
'78 Scout after
I get the thing lifted.  I've been recommended to run
15x10 wheels with
2.75" backspacing.
Looking around, it seems that low of a backspacing
isn't real common... 
at
least for the 15x10
cheapish steel wheels I've been looking at.

Do they rub if you go with a more standard 3.5"
backspacing?  Any other
opinions on
the backspacing?
