This sounds like it's worth trying, but since I have a low milage
rattler (I've put just about 10,000 miles on it, and it didn't have
much more than a break-in period before I got it) what "fix" am I
looking at?

Not being able to look at, or listen to, your engine doesn't keep me
from having an opinion, I imagine you've got a whole lot of miles left
in it even if you do nothing. Rod knock is much more serious than
piston slap, but you aren't describing a noise that sounds to me like
rod knock.
