[ihc] Re: Rhino revisited

David,
      Having had Rhino in my '72 *gulp* Chev Suburban, the Rhino guys will
be first to tell you that they don't like putting Rhino on anything other
than steel or factory paint. My truck, I spent two weeks with wire wheels
cleaning the entire inside of the tub of the truck to remove ALL the rust
until the entire inside looked like a mirror (albeit with many holes, some
as large as 1 inch). When I finally got it over to them, they said: "Hey
that looks great! It'll be easy to see where we shoot the sand now".
Yeah, they sand blast the surface first, unless it's FACTORY applied paint
in good condition. You'd probably be better off with Rhino first, THEN
dynamat, then some floor coverings like carpet or the like. I had my Sub's
<cut>

I want Rhino as the top coat for the water issue. I deliver mail. In Florida. Which means I've got my window open while crawling down on the street during rain storms. Even a hurricane, once. Carpeting isn't the way I'd want to go. Now, on my Scout II, which I'm planning on converting to a "normal" vehicle (i.e. seats and A/C), that I'm thinking about carpeting.

      I don't have actual numbers on the temp drop or the noise
attenuation, but it was significant. And the whole Rhino bill was so low,
I've been trying to find out what Dynamat recommends, and this (in part) is their response:

<begin quote>
1. It would be ok to install Dynamat Xtreme over Herculiner, then cover it with Rhinolining. I am not sure as to what the results will be. It should be better than what you have.

2. On the second truck, you can install Dynamat then Rhinolining. Dynamat Xtreme will help keep the heat out but is unpredictable after covering it with Rhinolining
<end quote>

Truck 1 is the Scout II, which is currently Herculined. Truck 2 is the 800 I'm buying from Fleck, which has no lining as yet. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what Dynamat is saying, applying Rhinolining OVER Dynamat could reduce the effectiveness of it. And you think that not only would the Rhinolining should be fine on it's own, but they probably won't install it over the Dynamat, anyway.

As an aside, anybody have any suggestions on something to cover the firewall with inside the engine compartment? Right now Dynamat Xtreme would work, but if anybody has any other suggestions I'd love to hear them. (I get a tremendous amount of heat off the firewall in the Scout II, so I'm going to want to treat both vehicles.)

Thanks again,

Dave
