[ihc] RE: (IHC)Gone Postal

What year CJ5 Springs are a direct bolt in? I see the '75 and earlier CJ5s
listed separately from the '76 and later CJ5s which everyone has listed with
the CJ7s. Let me know how your Prolift CJ7 spring retrofit works out. From
what I have found out over the last couple of days from research and
measuring I think I will end up moving the spring mounts inboard in the
front so I will not need to modify the perch cast into the Scout II Dana 44
pumpkin and move the perches on the rear axle and leave the spring mounts on
the rear where they are.

I think moving the springs in the front in will improve the steering radius
a good deal. The springs make contact with the tire right at the widest
point of the tire. Yes the tire will probably hit the frame anyway but when
lifted any tire/frame contact will take place higher up on the tire so the
tire will actually be slightly under the frame hitting the spring. Yes the
frame will still limit tire turning when the tire is stuffed up into the
wheel well but with the 35s I want to run I'll probably have clearance
problems with everything.

I expect to need to do a lot of fabrication to get what I want. To quote my
father when he was inspecting the thing I had dropped off in his back yard
(the City was paving my street the day I was able to pick up the Scout and I
couldn't leave an unregistered shell with out an engine sitting on the
street a block away so I took family liberties), "a small block would fit
nicely in there." From what I can tell so far it should but may require
some reworking of the firewall. This is why I went looking for a shell and
lucky found one that fit my needs for free. I hate to see good complete
Scouts get cut up and changed. There are cars to restore and cars to
customize. I definitely have one that is a good customizing candidate.

I heard that the CJ springs tended to sag over time under the weight of the
Scout 800. I started looking into them anyway. What hangers need to be
moved to work with the CJ7 Springs?

I used some military wrap CJ5 Springs on an 800B with 392. Those springs
didn't like all the sprung weight. I sold that Scout after using those
springs for over two years, with no sag. The CJ5 Springs are a direct bolt
in for Scout 80/800.

On my RHD Scout, I'm using some old RANCHO springs my Father bought well
over 20 years ago. These were made specifally for Scout 80/800, have nine
leafs in the front, and they are fairly stiff. If your into articulation,
these aren't the answer.

I like aftermarket CJ7 Springs when retrofitting Scout II axles spring under
on Scout 80/800. The front CJ7 Springs are 2" wide, like the Scout II
springs. This works out well as the pumkin is cast to accept 2" wide spring
for perch. Also, the demensions of length and axle orientation are VERY
close to Scout 80/800. I couldn't find any difference with a tape measure
using several different vehicals for reference.

BTW, I'm going to do this mod on RHD. I have Prolift CJ7 Springs, and Forged
"Slick Rock" Shackle Hangers. I'll make the spring mount myself outta square
stock tubing.

I should also mention that when going to spring under "non modified Scout II
44s" on 80/800, you will find the Frame spring mounts will need to be moved
in on the front, and out in the rear. Relocating the front frame spring
mounts is easy, but the back will require a little more engineering. It
maybe easier the move the pearches on the rear axle inboard. I'm not sure
about exactly what I'm gonna do on mine yet, but I do have several ideas.

I compared my Scout II to the "new" 800 and I run out of frame in the rear
before I can do what I want with Scout II springs. I also have heard of a
kit to allow the use of Scout II springs under an 800 and wonder how it
works. I'm also pretty sure I'll want to move the spring hangers on the
front in to match up with the hangers on the axle rather than modify the
perches on the axle to give a little more room for tire/spring clearance
when turning.

Moving the springs in, tire may still hit frame. The Scout II axels are
wider than 80/800 axles, so thats a little better for clearance.

I don't know what drive train I'll put in yet but I do know it will involve
a manual transmission and a V8. I do a lot of freeway driving so an over
drive would be nice but I'll see what I can find that will all work together
for a reasonable price.

For V8, get ready for a lot of fabbing. The more reasonable price MAYbe just
buying an 800 with V8 or I-6. A lot of Scout 800s that came with I-6 also
have motormounts for SV.

On the Scout II Leafs Springs, you will find that they are to long for
80/800
chassis. You can make them work if you must, but not without extending
frame.
Aftermarket H.D. Jeep CJ 7 Springs will fit Perfect and work fantastic, but
you will need to revise mounts on the frame. These will work great with
spring
under Scout II Dana 44 to 800 Conversion. Aftermarket Forged bolt on Shackle

Hangers for CJ7 maybe worth a look as well. IIRC made by Slick Rock.

BTW, I'm a BIG fan of the IHC 196. I've suprised many Scout II and V8 800
people with a IHC 152 in 800s off road. On the freeway, the 152 four bangers
do
kinda suck, but I'm sticking with 196 for my RHD Scout. 196s push better at
lower revs. I'm considering a .82 % Overdrive 5 Speed Conversion, but I need
more
reaserch on that. .82% Overdrive will compliment 4.88:1 real nice....

If your planning on repowering with non IHC, I recommend stroked out MOPAR
360 with Ramcharger 727. Be ready to do lotsa basic fab work.

On the Radiator, I like BeCool with twin electric fans. Thats what I'm
running in my Muscle Car, and it will not overheat.

BTW, I have RHD Scout, and I dig being on the Right Side.

OK, I'm going back to work on Scout.
