A bit of an update.
Thanks to Mark Korsten's pictures and some measurements, I've finished
building a tail-housing transmission mount for an IH 5spd.
The saga is posted on the BB @ -
http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/showthread.php?t=22052
The T-35 came to me with bellhousing mounts from a Loadstar, and this
would've bolted right into any pre-74 Light Line truck or T'all. The
74/75 are unique in their use of a tail-housing crossmember and mount,
like a Scout II uses (same part number, too).
The factory had a small "L" shaped bracket that bolted to a rear cover
of the T34/35/36 and then elbowed rearward, and sits on the (moved back
one set of bolt-holes) 4spd crossmember and bracket.
I started with a piece of 6"x.250 flat plate. I used cardboard to
transfer the bolt pattern from the transmission to the plate, and cut it
out.
I used a 3.5" hole saw to cut around the "dimple" in the lower rear
cover, then three 3/8" holes for the mounting bolts.
It took some doing, but I think I managed to cut the plate parallel to
the top cover of the transmission.
I deviated from the factory setup by putting my "L" about 3/4" higher
than the stock piece. This puts it just below the lower bolt hole, but
also above the drain plug - JUST barely. I had some 5"x3/8" plate handy
to make the "L".. overkill, I'm sure.
I ground a notch to clear the drain plug.
I then cut 3 piece of 1/4" flat to make my 3/4" spacer needed to get the
right height back.
I may have to unbolt the "isolator"/bushing and remove my 3 1/4" shims
to get the drain plug out, but I won't have to remove the entire
mounting bracket from the transmission (I'm told the bolts I'm using
pass into the oiled area of the transmission, so by removing the adapter
I'd be draining 1/2 the transmission onto myself in the process).
The bracket is now painted up and ready to go (along with all 3
crossmembers)
I bought 4 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic 15w-50 for $20. I was tempted to
buy the CD-50 I've heard others (Dan Phariss) recommend, but while 5gal
for $113 isn't a bad deal, I didn't feel like parting with $113 this
week. Perhaps I'll run the Mobil 1 for a year to clean things out, then
drain and refill with CD-50.
I almost had everything out and the new combo in yesterday, but I also
found you can't quite swing a 392/T98 combo out of the engine bay of a
74/75 without pulling the core support.. and since I wanted to put the
392/T-35 back in as a unit, disassembling the 392/T98 wasn't a good option.
It's easier to pull the entire front clip than to pull the core
support.. so removing the front clip is the next step. THEN I can lift
the drivetrain out and slide the new stuff in.
Hoping to hear from a friend with a torch about customizing the shifter
soon.
