Re:[ihc] 50's 120 automatics?

I concur. If the unit I am thinking of is in that, then it was used in
different iterations up until about 1980. A few of the internal parts
were even used beyond that in the Ford AOD. The old ones had an extra
oil pump in the rear of the case, so they could be push-started. They
are dead simple, have a cast-iron case so they are strong (and heavy),
and parts are still available. If a person wanted to rebuild one,
friction materials have come a long way since then, so you could put in
heavy-duty frictions and steels that were not available when it was new.
I believe there is even a shift kit that will fit that, if that is your
inclination. My only worry, if you were going to haul a lot of very
heavy loads, you may end up burning it up fairly soon, but which may give
you the excuse to put in those heavy duty components. :-) Otherwise,
just drive it and be happy.

Depends on which auto it is, but if it's the one I'm thinking of, it's
about
as strong as you can get. The one I'm thinking of actually has
provisions
to let you push start it without damaging the transmission.

AFAIK regardless of whether it's that tranny or not, they are all good
transmissions. Be advised that some of them still required that you
manually shift the gears and leaving it in 3rd to start could damage the
transmission.
